You will be asked to pay a convenience fee for this service.Covington County is one of only several counties in the State of Alabama that offers this service. It's a convenient way to keep from standing in line at the Courthouse and renew your tag at your home or business. We accept MasterCard, Visa, Debit Cards, or an electronic check from your checking account. Your fee per tag for an electronic check is $3.50 for the first tag and $2.50 for each additional tag. Credit and debit transactions will be charged a 3% convenience fee with a minimum of $3.50 and $2.50 for each additional tag. The convenience fee is not paid to Covington County but to IMS Enterprises, Inc., an Alabama company.Upon completion of your renewal, you will receive a confirmation number and a printed receipt. Please record the confirmation number, print and retain the receipt until you receive your actual tag or sticker. Taxes:A. Deed Tax - $1.00 per thousand or $0.50 per five hundred (based on appraised value of property) rounded up to next five hundred; minimum deed tax is $0.50

C. For any proceeding in the probate court or for receiving, keeping and paying out money or distributing money where there is no fee allowed by law: the same fees shall be charged as are now allowed to the register in the Circuit Court as provided for in subdivision (3) of Section 12-19-71. provided, however, for any proceeding under the equity power of the probate court the same fees shall be charges as are provided in this section.
Notary Public
A. A Notary Public is a public officer whose function it is
1) To administer oaths; and 2) To attest and certify, by his/her signature and official seal, certain classes of documents, in order to give them credit and authenticity; and 3) To take acknowledgments of deeds and other conveyances and certify the same; and 4) To perform certain official acts, chiefly in commercial matters, such as protesting of notes and bills, the notice of foreign drafts, and marine protests in cases of damage.
B. Requirements to be appointed a notary public in Covington County
1) Must be a resident of Covington County; and 2) Must be a registered voter in Covington County; and 3) Must be capable of posting bond in the required amount.
C. Types of Notaries
1) County; may perform duties of the office only in the county where he or she is appointed 2) State-at-Large; nay perform duties of the office state-wide.
D. Steps to be appointed a notary
1) Applicant must contact an insurance company to obtain a notary public bond of $10,000.00; 2) Bond and $20.50 filing fee must be filed with Probate Judge within 40 days of the date of the letter of appointment.
E. Important to remember
The office of notary public is a serious and responsible office and should not be taken lightly. Abuse of the office or irresponsibilty in the performance of a notary's duties can result in grave consequences. If a notary public has doubts about the propriety of any action, he/she should seek competent professional advice before he/she acts.
